Originally written: 12-10-2025 Deep in a forest, lived a Crow with powerful eyes that let her see through the magical veils of the world. She could see into the future and warn when storms were coming and where animals should seek shelter. She could see the hunters in their camouflage and their hidden traps. She could see the lies animals told each other regarding hunting one another’s prey or stealing foraged food. She could see the death of many of the forest animals well beyond her own lifespan. Truly, there was nothing Crow could not see.
The animals in the forest would bring Crow trinkets as an offering for her foresight. They would bring her food, shiny objects, assorted camping gear, and random objects she stuffed into her nest.
Crow enjoyed helping the animals and providing them with safety, but at night, she would roll in her nest, unable to rest or sleep due to constant nightmares of impending doom. She saw visions of storms destroying nests and dens, hunters killing cubs and families, wildfires burning the forest to ash, and all manner of wicked futures. She played with the various trinkets to distract herself, but despite her best efforts, nothing would break through the horrible visions.
One day, Crow spotted Fox playing outside his den, talking with the animals waiting in line to visit her. Fox created beautiful illusions of fireworks, parades, and delicious food to share with the animals. The animals ignored Fox, not interested in his tricks because they were fake. He catered to the animals, trying to show off his magical powers to bring the animals joy in exchange for a trinket, but they chased him away, shouting, “No one wants your fake illusions!” Depressed, he returned to his den.
That night, Crow flew down to Fox’s den, where she saw him dancing and arranging invisible objects while talking to himself.
Crow asked, “Fox, what are you moving? There is nothing in your paws?”
“Don’t you see Crow, I’m moving my new lamp onto my desk,” Fox replied with a smile.
“Fox, I see everything,” Crow responded. “There is nothing here but sticks and dirt.”
“Only to your eyes,” Fox answered. “I have the power to cast illusions. And currently, my whole den is filled with lovely trinkets and toys from my many adventures from faraway lands.”
Fox sprinted around his room, showing Crow his photos of elves, pixies, and rainbow rivers in enchanted forests, wands and staffs he obtained from magicians, a grill to make food, and an oven to make biscuits. Stunned, Crow watched as Fox continually ran around his empty room, showing her nothing.
“You really can’t see my illusions?” Fox asked.
“I can’t.”
Puzzled, Fox focused on an illusory vase. He concentrated with all his might, and before her eyes, Crow was able to see the vase.
“That’s amazing! I know it’s fake, but I can’t see through it.”
Fox smiled, proud of his accomplishment.
Impressed by Fox’s powers, she asked Fox if he could cast an illusion to help her sleep. She explained her situation of seeing terrible futures all the time, and none of her trinkets have been capable of helping her rest. Confident in his abilities, Fox agreed to help Crow.
Fox informed Crow to bring her nest into his den so he could think of the perfect illusion for her. Crow moved her nest into Fox’s den, nestling herself within the sticks near an alcove on the right.
Fox cast an illusion that turned the entire room into a large bird nest. The walls were covered in thick twigs and brush, the ground was layered with soft moss, and her trinkets were placed neatly around the room. Crow looked around, but still only saw Fox’s den.
Fox tried again, casting an illusion of her living in the hollow of a tree. The walls were made of thick bark, an opening near the top for moonlight to peer in, and soft leaves cushioning her nest for a soft bed. Crow looked around, and again, only saw Fox’s den.
Frustrated, Fox shook his head, fluffed his tail, clapped his paws together, and created an illusion of his den becoming a beautiful nest with wide spacing, a bright, starry night sky, a dazzling moon shining overhead, and a warm breeze blowing past. Crow looked around and saw the amazing illusion before her. She saw it all and fluttered around the den in excitement. She could feel the warm wind blowing, the night sky with stars twinkling in the distance. She flew up and bonked her head on the ceiling, forgetting she was indoors.
Crow lied in her nest, gazing at the stars until finally drifting to sleep; Fox held the illusion until Crow’s eyes closed and her body relaxed in her bed.
The next morning, Crow woke up feeling rested and fully restored to her full strength. She fluttered around the den before thanking Fox for all his help. Fox smiled, happy knowing someone appreciated his illusions. Crow flew to her tree, grabbed all her trinkets, and brought them to Fox. Fox was overjoyed, placing the trinkets around his den with meticulous care. Happy, Fox invited Crow to stay with him so he could cast more illusions for her and she could get proper sleep to help the other animals. Crow enthusiastically agreed, flying around the den before landing on Fox’s back.
Crow continued providing predictions to the animals for trinkets, which she would give to Fox. Fox would cast illusions to allow Crow to sleep in peace.
